“Are you talking to me?” -Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver)
“Then Samuel said, ‘Speak for your servant is listening.” -1 Samuel 3:9
TAKE HEART!
The same question asked two different ways tells us something. The question asked by Robert DeNiro intimidates. It became well known and often imitated usually in a New York accent. It’s a “don’t poke the bear” moment. Samuel the prophet, as a boy, asked it as “Are you talking to me God because I’m here and I’m listening.” What could these two quotes from different times, different circumstances and different meanings and implications possibly tell us?
I believe they are guides to the hope of answering the big questions of life.
We have questions, serious questions. There are literally thousands of books on the subject of answering the biggest question of all. What is the purpose and direction of my life? Critical thinking based upon knowledge is important, however, it is not our thinking that gives us our purpose. It’s God’s answers!
The self-important, I’m in control “Are you to talking to me?” lifestyle doesn’t get us there. We can’t hear if we won’t listen.
Do you know that God is always thinking about you? He has more thoughts about you than there are grains of sand. He has your future. He has your way. Are you prepared to do what it takes to hear it?
Have Hope! Ask, listen and wait-patiently. I know it’s difficult, but the answers are worth it!
